Large jute rugs, 160x230 to 200x300

A large jute rug – 230 cm and up on its longest side – adds a slightly uneven, flatwoven texture which, at this scale, grounds a sofa or a bed with natural texture rather than pattern, It’s more textured and less hard-wearing than wool, which makes it better suited to living rooms and bedrooms than to hallways or dining rooms. If the room takes heavier traffic, large wool rugs will last longer at the same size. For the same material in other sizes, browse our full collection of jute rugs.

Choosing a large jute rug for a living room or bedroom

Large jute rugs are popular because their natural, woven texture gives a big floor a calm, grounding base without competing with furniture or artwork. They’re a durable, plant-based fibre that holds up well to everyday living room and lounge use, lighter and easier to position than a deep-pile large rug of the same size. It’s the rug people choose when they want a large space to feel earthy and considered rather than heavy or dominant – and typically for less than an equivalent large wool rug would cost.

Frequently asked questions

160 x 230 cm suits a two- or three-seat sofa with the front legs resting on the rug, while 200 x 300 cm covers a fuller seating area with an armchair and coffee table included. Measure the seating group rather than the room, as a large jute rug works best framing the furniture rather than filling the floor.

For everyday living-room and bedroom traffic, yes. Jute is softer and less hard-wearing than wool, so it copes less well with the constant footfall of a hallway or the chair movement of a dining room. If the room is one of those, choose wool at the same size instead.

It’s not the best fit. Spills are part of dining, and jute can’t be soaked or deep-washed without risking shrinkage and discolouration — at 200 x 300 cm there’s no practical way to lift and dry it. A large jute rug works better in a living or lounge area than under daily dining use.

Hoover regularly on low suction with the beater bar switched off, and blot spills immediately with a dry, undyed cloth rather than rubbing. Never soak or deep-wash it. For stubborn stains at this size, a professional rug cleaner is the safer route.

Yes, and it’s one of the main reasons people buy jute at this size. The flat, low-profile weave makes a stable base, so keep the top rug noticeably smaller and centred on the seating group. If it shifts, a thin anti-slip pad between the two layers holds it in place.
