Rectangular rugs

It depends on the room and the furniture it needs to sit around. As a rough guide: small rectangular rugs measure under 160cm on the longest side, medium rectangular sizes sit between 160–229cm, large rectangular rugs measure 230–349cm, and extra-large pieces are anything over 350cm. Our rug size guide walks through how to measure your room and choose the perfect placement for every room.

Almost any room, which is why it’s one of the most popular shapes we sell. A rectangular rug for the living room anchors a seating area, while a rectangular bedroom rugs sit neatly either side of or under the bed. A rectangular rug is also a popular choice for kitchens and hallways where floor space is tighter and spills are more likely.

It depends on the size of your table. A four-seater dining table usually suits a 160 x 230 cm rug, while six-seater tables work well with 200 x 300 cm rugs. A flatweave or low-pile construction is the practical choice here, since chairs move often and spills need to be easy to clean up. Allow at least 60–70cm of rug on each side of the table, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

Yes, and it’s a common combination. Keep the same 60–70cm clearance rule, measuring from the edge of the table and chairs – at their widest, with chairs pulled out – to the edge of the rug. A rectangular rug under a round table can also make a squarer room feel more spacious than a round rug of the same coverage would.

A rectangular rug made from wool is a versatile choice: durable, warm underfoot and naturally stain-resistant. Rectangular jute rugs adds natural texture but suits lower-traffic rooms rather than busy walkways. Cotton is lighter and easier to move, and many are machine washable — ideal for busy homes with kids or pets.
