What shades of grey are available?

Grey isn’t one shade – here are the main tones to choose from:Light grey rugs: A soft, pale tone that works as a bright, everyday neutral in almost any room.Dark grey rugs: Strong, grounding shades that add contrast against pale walls and flooring.Charcoal grey rugs: A deep, near-black grey that adds definition without the starkness of true black.Silver grey rugs: A cooler, slightly reflective tone that suits bright, modern spaces.Grey and white rugs: Two-tone designs that pair a light neutral base with grey detailing, for texture without a single strong colour.

Where should I place a grey or silver rug?

Living room: A mid-to-dark grey living room rug grounds a seating area without competing with your sofa or walls. Rest at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug so it anchors the space instead of floating in the middle of the floor.Bedroom: A softer, lighter grey bedroom rug keeps the room feeling calm and airy underfoot rather than making a statement. Centre it under the end two-thirds of the bed, so there’s an even border either side to step onto.Dining room: A mid-to-dark grey dining room rug is a practical choice, as it hides everyday spills and crumbs better than a pale rug in a room that gets heavy use. Leave 60–70 cm of rug beyond the table on every side, so all the chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out to sit down.

Light and dark grey rugs for every home

Grey is one of the most popular rug colours because it’s a genuine neutral: it won’t clash if you repaint the walls, swap the sofa or update your cushions, so the rug doesn’t need replacing every time your décor changes. Grey also hides everyday marks and pet hair better than a pale shade, and pairs cleanly with wood, tile, stone or carpeted floors alike, ensuring long-lasting elegance wherever they’re placed.

Our range includes a variety of sizes, shapes and designs, including stain-resistant and washable grey rugs – a practical choice for a kitchen, hallway or family room. Grey’s forgiving tone also means any lingering marks are far less noticeable between cleans.

Light grey rugs: A soft, pale tone that works as a bright, everyday neutral in almost any room.
Dark grey rugs: Strong, grounding shades that add contrast against pale walls and flooring.
Charcoal grey rugs: A deep, near-black grey that adds definition without the starkness of true black.

Grey and white rugs: Two-tone designs that pair a light neutral base with grey detailing, for texture without a single strong colour.

Grey is one of the most versatile rug colours, sitting comfortably alongside blue, green, yellow, pink, black and warm wood tones without competing with them. If your sofa or carpet is already grey, choose a rug a shade lighter or darker than your other grey furnishings so the room doesn’t look flat.

It depends on the room: a large grey rug (230–349 cm on the longest side) suits most living rooms, big enough for a sofa and coffee table to sit on or in front of it, while a small grey rug (under 160 cm) rug works well beside a bed or armchair. For open-plan spaces or bigger rooms, an extra large grey rug (over 350 cm) keeps the proportions right – see our rug size guide for exact measurements room by room.

Light grey rugs, from pale dove to silver tones, reflect more light and can make a small or dim room feel more open, while dark grey rugs, through to charcoal and anthracite, hide everyday marks better and add more visual weight in a larger room. Both work as a neutral base, so the right choice comes down to how much contrast you want against your walls and flooring.
