A 200 x 300 rug is ideal for larger rooms, perfectly suited to 3–4 seater sofas, large corner sofas, or a full sofa-and-armchair setup. In dining rooms, it suits 6–8 seater dining tables, keeping chairs comfortably on the rug even when pulled out. Not sure if a 200 x 300 rug is the right fit? 200 x 300 rugs: Everything you need to know

A 200 x 300 cm rug is the most popular large rug size for a reason — it’s generous enough to ground a full seating arrangement, seat a dining table for eight, or frame a king-size bed with the kind of border that actually looks intentional. Sometimes referred to as a 6″ x 9″ rug, it’s the size interior designers reach for when a room needs presence, not just coverage.

Frequently asked questions

A 200 x 300 cm rug measures 2 metres wide by 3 metres long, covering 6 m² of floor. In imperial measurements that’s approximately 6’7″ x 9’10”. To put it in context: it’s large enough to seat all four legs of a standard sofa, accommodate a dining table for six to eight people, or frame a king-size bed with a visible border on all sides.

A 200 x 300 rug works best in large living rooms roughly 4.5 m wide or more, king or super-king bedrooms, and dining rooms seating six to eight. In an average-sized room it can look oversized, so if your space is closer to 3.5–4 m wide, a 160 x 230 cm rug is usually the better fit.

For most large living rooms — those 4.5 metres wide or more — a 200 x 300 rug is an excellent fit. It’s wide enough to bring all the main furniture into one defined zone and long enough to read as a deliberate anchor rather than a floating mat. In exceptionally large or open-plan rooms, you may want to consider a larger size.

A standard king size bed is 150 x 200 cm. A 200 x 300 rug centred under the bed gives approximately 25 cm on each side and 50 cm at the foot — a proper, visible border that justifies the investment. This is generally considered the ideal minimum for a king-size bedroom rug.

Yes, provided the table is no wider than around 100 cm and no longer than around 200 cm. Aim for at least 60 cm of rug beyond the table edge on all sides, so that chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. For larger tables or more generous clearance, a bigger size may be warranted.

It can, for sofas up to about 2.2 m wide. Beyond that width, or with a large corner sofa, you’ll usually only fit the front two legs on the rug – still enough to anchor the seating area, but a 250 x 350 cm rug gives more room if you want the full frame on the rug.

Wool is the most durable all-rounder for living rooms and bedrooms, and it holds up well to heavy furniture at this size. Cotton and polypropylene are lighter, easier to clean and often suit busy households better. Jute and viscose add texture or shine but are better suited to lower-traffic rooms.

Choose 200 x 300 cm if your room is roughly 4.5–5.5 m wide, your dining table seats six to eight, or you want a practical border around a king bed. Go up to a 250 x 350 cm rug if your room is wider still, your table seats eight to ten, or you have a super-king bed and want a more generous border on all sides.
