Why choose a square rug for your living room?

Choosing a square rug for your living room isn’t just a design choice—it’s a smart way to bring balance, structure and style to your space.

1. Ideal for square rooms or seating arrangements

Square living room rugs mirror the proportions of square or nearly square rooms. They work especially well beneath a central coffee table or in a symmetrical seating layout with sofas and armchairs, helping to tie everything together.

2. Versatile styling options

Whether you prefer a modern Scandinavian style or cosy rustic vibes, square living room rugs offer a versatile backdrop. Use them to define a space within an open-plan layout or to add texture and warmth to a minimalist design.

3. Comfort and insulation

Square living room rugs add a layer of softness underfoot, providing both comfort and insulation. This is especially beneficial in homes with hard flooring such as wood, tile or laminate.

Sizing tips for a square living room rug

Choosing the right size is key to achieving a cohesive look. Here’s how a square living room rug can be used effectively:

• Under a coffee table: A 200 x 200 cm square rug works well for compact living rooms or smaller setups.
• Larger living rooms: A 250 x 250 cm square rug can accommodate a full furniture arrangement, with front legs of sofas and chairs placed on the rug to unify the space.
• Layering look: For an added touch of style, layer a square living room rug over a larger neutral base rug or combine it with other shapes for an eclectic design.

What size square rug should I use in my living room?

This depends on your furniture layout. For smaller seating areas, a 160 cm square rug may be sufficient, while larger spaces often benefit from a 240 cm or 300 cm square rug to ensure the furniture sits comfortably on the rug and the space feels unified.

Are square rugs suitable for all living room layouts?

Square living room rugs are ideal for symmetrical or square-shaped rooms and seating arrangements. In rectangular rooms, they can still work effectively if used under a square table or as a design accent in a larger layered arrangement.
