ShabarganHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BrownRunner81 x 297 cm

The Shabargan runner draws its inspiration from the storied weaving traditions of northern Afghanistan. This region has long been a crossroads for diverse cultures and artistic influences, resulting in a unique visual language that blends nomadic motifs with formal, structured designs. Rugs from this area are celebrated for their ability to synthesise ancient techniques with a bold, contemporary aesthetic.

The term hand-knotted refers to the traditional method where individual strands of wool are tied onto a foundation of sturdy cotton warp threads. This technique is not just a method of production but a mark of quality. The density of the knots determines the rug's longevity and the level of detail in the design, with higher counts resulting in a more refined and resilient final product.

The design of this runner is defined by its repetitive, bold medallion motifs, often referred to as guls. These geometric shapes are deeply symbolic within the regional tradition, often representing heritage, protection, or the natural world. The use of a rich, warm colour palette, dominated by deep reds and accented with contrasting tones, is a classic hallmark of Afghan weaving that brings a sense of historical gravitas to any room.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an opportunity to hold a tangible link to a rich cultural lineage. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts for their authentic, human-made character, which stands in stark contrast to mass-produced alternatives. By choosing this runner, you are honouring a craft that has been passed down through generations, preserving a vital piece of artisanal history.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that ensures exceptional structural integrity and detail. Each knot is placed individually by a skilled artisan, a process that requires immense focus and expertise. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the rug achieves a level of precision that allows for the sharp, well-defined geometric patterns you see across the surface.

Given the dimensions of 297 x 81 cm and the impressive knot density, this rug represents hundreds of hours of dedicated work. This high knot count is the primary reason for the rug's durability and the density of its pile, ensuring it remains a staple in your home for many years. The weight of 7.7 kg is a testament to the quality and volume of material used in its creation, highlighting the substantial nature of its construction.
