PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Runner80 x 415 cm

The tradition of Patchwork rugs is rooted in the creative reuse of historic hand-woven textiles. Originating from Turkey, this craft involves selecting well-preserved sections of older, semi-antique rugs and artfully stitching them together. This practice not only preserves beautiful fragments of Anatolian weaving history but also creates a completely new design that bridges different eras.

Each panel used in this runner represents a distinct weaving tradition, often featuring geometric and tribal motifs that have been passed down through generations of rural weavers. By combining these different fragments, the rug becomes a visual archive of regional Turkish patterns, showcasing the diverse artistic expressions found across Anatolian villages.

The rich red and brown tones traditional to these older rugs were originally achieved using natural dyes derived from local plants and minerals. Over 20 to 80 years, these colours have matured and softened, developing a gentle patina that only age can produce. This natural aging process gives the runner a depth of colour that modern, mass-produced textiles cannot replicate.

Owning a semi-antique Turkish Patchwork runner is an appreciation of both historical craftsmanship and modern design sensibility. It offers collectors and homeowners a piece with real cultural weight, where every stitched segment tells a story of past weavers, making it a highly valued addition to any interior.

This runner is handmade using traditional hand-knotting techniques, where skilled artisans tie individual knots to create a dense and durable pile. The process requires immense patience and precision, ensuring that the structure remains strong and stable for years to come.

With a weight of 11.6 kg for its 415 x 80 cm size, this piece demonstrates a solid, substantial build. This weight reflects the density of the wool pile and the thoroughness of the hand-stitching used to join the individual semi-antique panels together, creating a unified and robust runner.
