PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Orange / Beige156 x 233 cm

The art of the patchwork rug finds its roots in the long-standing Turkish tradition of upcycling and preserving textiles. For generations, weavers in the Middle East have valued the longevity of high-quality materials, and this contemporary practice honours that legacy by giving new purpose to fragments of older, characterful rugs.

The term patchwork refers to the assembly of hand-knotted sections, each carrying its own narrative. This method requires a keen eye for colour and pattern, as the artisan must balance the varying levels of wear and fading found in each fragment to create a harmonious final composition that feels balanced and intentionally curated.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their eclectic yet structured appearance. By combining different fragments, the design often highlights the beauty of traditional motifs and borders that might otherwise be lost, recontextualising them into a modern, geometric format that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

Owning a patchwork rug is an investment in cultural continuity. It represents a bridge between the craftsmanship of the past and the design sensibilities of today. Collectors value these pieces not only for their aesthetic appeal but for the way they celebrate the enduring nature of hand-knotted textiles.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense skill and patience. By assembling these individual, aged segments, the artisans create a cohesive, durable structure where each seam is reinforced to ensure the integrity of the finished piece.

With a total weight of 8.8 kg across its 233 x 156 cm surface, the construction is notably dense and substantial. This weight is a direct indicator of the quality and the significant human effort required to select, prepare, and stitch each fragment into a unified whole.

The creation of a patchwork piece involves a deep understanding of textile history, as each section must be carefully matched for tension and durability. This labour-intensive process ensures that the finished rug maintains its form and charm for years to come.
