Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / Dark red62 x 100 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, which was historically a major trading hub for textiles and carpets in Central Asia. While the design originated in this region, the finest examples today are woven in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving traditions across borders as artisans carried their techniques and patterns to new lands, continuously refining them over generations.

The term '2ply' refers to the construction of the wool pile, where two individual strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This technical choice is significant because it produces a pile that is denser, more lustrous, and more resilient than single-ply construction. For the owner, this translates into a rug that feels more substantial, retains its colour vibrancy longer, and stands up better to daily wear.

The signature design elements of a Bokhara rug are the repeating gul motifs—typically octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in precise rows across the field. These are usually framed by intricate, formal borders that create a sense of order and balance. This specific piece displays these classic motifs with a refined clarity, maintaining the traditional aesthetic while showcasing the high standard of regional craftsmanship.

Rugs from this tradition are highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts for their cultural weight and the immense skill required to produce them. Owning a hand-knotted rug is a way of connecting with a storied past, where each piece represents a tangible link to heritage and human endeavour. It is not merely a floor covering, but an expression of lasting quality and artistic legacy.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, a process that requires significant time and unwavering attention to detail. Every single knot is placed by hand, creating a dense and consistent pile that reflects the dedication invested into its creation. This traditional method ensures that the rug is built to withstand the test of time, far surpassing the durability of mass-produced alternatives.

The precision of the hand-knotting process is evident in the clarity of the patterns and the overall stability of the rug structure. With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the construction is remarkably fine, which directly contributes to the sharpness of the design and the luxurious, dense feel of the wool pile. This level of complexity is why such pieces are considered premium investments in craft.

The weight of 1.6 kg across its 100 x 62 cm dimensions serves as a testament to the quality and quantity of materials used. A higher density of wool means more labour and more material, resulting in a rug that feels substantial and grounded. This marriage of skilled technique and quality materials results in a finished product that is as sturdy as it is beautiful.
