The Malayer rug tradition hails from a region in the western part of the Middle East, nestled between the famous weaving centres of Hamadan and Arak. These rugs are celebrated for their blend of tribal spontaneity and formal garden designs, often reflecting the personal creativity of the individual weavers who produce them.

The term Mahal, often associated with these rugs, refers to a tradition of high-quality weaving that emphasises decorative, flowing patterns. These rugs are typically crafted with a focus on durability, using techniques that have been passed down through generations of families to ensure the pile remains lustrous and soft even after decades of use.

Signature design elements in this style frequently include a central medallion surrounded by dense floral sprays, vines, and palmettes. The borders are often formal and balanced, providing a structured frame for the more organic and fluid designs found within the central field of the rug.

Owning a piece from this region is a testament to the appreciation of heritage and refined skill. These rugs are highly valued by collectors because they represent a living history of craft, where every rug serves as a unique narrative of its origin and the hands that brought it to life.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate weeks of focused effort to its creation. The process begins with the preparation of a sturdy cotton foundation, upon which thousands of individual knots are tied by hand to form the dense, resilient Wool pile.

With a total weight of 13.6 kg spread across its 2.72 m2 surface, this rug reflects a substantial use of materials and a high level of craftsmanship. This significant weight is a clear indicator of the rug's density and the immense manual labour invested in every square centimetre of the piece.

The precision required to maintain consistent tension and pattern accuracy throughout the weaving process is what gives this rug its durability. Because every knot is placed manually, the resulting structure is far more robust than machine-made alternatives, ensuring that your investment remains a centrepiece of your home for many years.
