Loristan ca. 1920Hand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red152 x 210 cm

This rug belongs to the rich weaving tradition of the Loristan region in Persia, historically inhabited by Lori tribes who passed their craft down through generations. These nomadic and village weavers drew deep inspiration from the natural mountainous surroundings, translating local flora and fauna into geometric symbols that told stories of their daily lives.

The designation ca. 1920 places this piece firmly in the antique category, representing a period when natural dyes and traditional hand-spinning techniques were still standard practice. The wool used in this era was sheared from mountain sheep, yielding a high lanolin content that naturally repels dirt and maintains a soft, enduring lustre over the decades.

Traditional Lori designs often feature bold geometric medallions, hooked diamonds, and stylised animal motifs enclosed by protective borders. These symbols were not merely decorative but served as cultural expressions and talismans of well-being, health, and safe travels for the weaving families.

Collecting vintage pieces from this region allows you to preserve tangible examples of tribal artistry that have largely vanished in modern industrial production. Owning a rug of this age connects your living space to a long lineage of skilled hands and traditional craft.

This rug was meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a traditional craft process requiring immense patience and precision. For a piece measuring 210 x 152 cm with a knot density of 90,000 knots per m2, the makers tied approximately 287,000 individual knots by hand.

A project of this scale represents months of dedicated manual labour. Each knot is secured individually by hand, resulting in a firm, dense foundation and exceptional pattern definition that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

The substantial weight of 9.3 kg further highlights the generous use of natural materials and tight knotting, ensuring the rug lies flat and stable on your floor while retaining its structure and beauty for generations.
