Light Nomad KilimHand WovenRug

Brown / Beige104 x 152 cm

The Ghashghai people are a nomadic confederation known for their rich cultural history and exceptional weaving skills. For generations, they have moved across the Middle Eastern landscape, and their rugs have evolved to reflect both their migratory lifestyle and their deep connection to the natural world.

Kelim refers to a specific type of flat-woven rug that lacks a pile. By utilising a technique where the coloured threads are passed back and forth to create the pattern, weavers achieve a clean, reversible aesthetic that is both functional and visually striking. This method is highly prized for its durability and the crispness of its geometric motifs.

The visual language of Ghashghai weaving is defined by bold, geometric shapes and earth-inspired colour palettes. You will often find stylised representations of plants, animals, and tribal symbols, all organised with a sense of rhythmic symmetry. The diamond and chevron patterns seen here are signature elements that celebrate the weaver's ability to create complex beauty through simple, repeated forms.

Collectors value Ghashghai kelims not only for their aesthetic appeal but for what they represent in terms of heritage and skill. Owning one is an opportunity to preserve a living art form, connecting your modern home to a long lineage of nomadic craft and creative expression.

This rug is created through a traditional hand-woven process, a method that requires immense patience and skill. Unlike machine-made alternatives, each element of the design is carefully built by hand, resulting in a flat-woven structure that is both lightweight and remarkably sturdy.

The quality of this piece is evidenced by its construction, weighing in at 3.2 kg across its 152 x 104 cm frame. This density of material reflects the hours of dedicated labour invested by the weaver, ensuring that the rug maintains its shape and structural integrity even after years of use in your home.
