Owning this rug means possessing an original work that will never be replicated. Its origin in the Middle East is reflected in every detail, from the carefully balanced border to the expressive, symbolic figures that populate the field, offering you a connection to a long-standing tradition of craft and expression.

The Kurdi rugs of the Ghuchan region belong to a long and storied tradition of weaving practised by the Kurdish tribes of the Middle East. These tribes have historically lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle, and their weaving traditions have evolved to reflect both their environment and their cultural identity, resulting in rugs that are as robust as they are artistically significant.

The term Kurdi refers to the distinct weaving style of these regional groups, who are known for their ability to create rugs that are exceptionally durable. The use of high-quality, local wool is a hallmark of this tradition, providing a natural resilience that is prized by collectors who value rugs that maintain their integrity over time.

Visually, Kurdi Ghuchan rugs are celebrated for their bold, expressive use of geometric and pictorial motifs. It is common to see stylised animals, birds, and tribal symbols woven into the field, often arranged in repeating medallions. These motifs are not merely decorative but serve as a visual language that connects the weaver to their heritage and the natural world.

Collecting a rug from this tradition is an act of preserving a unique cultural history. Because these pieces are made by hand within specific tribal communities, they carry the mark of the individual weaver and the collective wisdom of generations. Owning one is a way to bring a piece of authentic, storied craftsmanship into your home, ensuring that these traditions continue to be valued and shared.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused, precise effort to bring the design to life. The process begins with carefully selected, high-quality wool, which is then woven row by row to create a durable, dense foundation that can withstand years of wear.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, this piece represents a significant investment of human skill. This density is essential for achieving the sharp, defined edges of the animal motifs and the overall structural integrity of the rug. It is this high knot count that ensures the pile remains firm and luxurious to the touch for generations.

The substantial weight of 13.9 kg for a rug of this size is a testament to the amount of wool and labour invested in its construction. This weight not only speaks to the quality of the materials but also ensures that the rug stays firmly in place, providing a grounded, premium feel that only authentic, hand-knotted craftsmanship can offer.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
