KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black99 x 147 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern regions of Afghanistan, an area with a storied history of nomadic and village weaving traditions. These rugs are deeply influenced by the cultural exchange along the ancient trade routes that once connected Central Asia, leading to a distinct aesthetic that blends local motifs with broader regional influences.

The production of these rugs relies on time-honoured techniques passed down through generations. The use of hand-spun Wool is central to their quality, as the natural variations in the fibre absorb dyes differently, giving the rug a vibrant, life-filled appearance that ages gracefully over time.

The visual language of a Kunduz rug is typically characterised by bold, geometric medallions or repeating floral motifs set against a dark, contrasting field. These patterns are not merely decorative but often hold symbolic meaning, reflecting the environment and the heritage of the weaving community that created them.

Collecting a Kunduz rug is an investment in human skill and cultural history. These pieces are highly valued by those who appreciate the dedication required to create such complex designs without the use of modern machinery. Owning one is a way to preserve a traditional craft while adding a piece of authentic global artistry to your home.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process requiring immense patience and precision from skilled artisans. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weaver ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that machines cannot emulate, resulting in a durable and resilient foundation.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 147 x 99 cm rug represents hundreds of hours of dedicated labour. This high knot count is directly responsible for the sharpness of the motifs and the dense, luxurious feel of the pile, offering a tangible sense of the human effort invested in its completion.

The substantial weight of 4.4 kg further highlights the quality of materials used and the density of the weave. This weight is a hallmark of authentic, well-constructed rugs, signifying that a generous amount of material has been used to create a heavy, long-lasting piece that stays firmly in place.
