KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black201 x 289 cm

Kunduz rugs hail from the northern regions of Afghanistan, a territory with a profound history of nomadic and semi-nomadic weaving traditions. These rugs are deeply connected to the cultural identity of the region, where the art of knotting has been passed down through generations, serving both as a functional necessity for nomadic life and as a medium for artistic expression.

The term Kunduz refers to the specific provenance and the design language developed in this area. These rugs are typically crafted with a focus on durability, utilising high-quality wool that is known for its natural lanolin content, which adds a beautiful lustre and makes the wool resistant to wear and staining over time.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their bold geometric patterns and deep, earthy colour palettes. The motifs often include repeating guls or intricate geometric lattices that draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape and tribal heritage. The use of deep red tones is a hallmark of this tradition, often contrasted with subtle highlights in beige or dark accents to create a sense of depth and movement.

Collecting a Kunduz rug is an invitation to own a piece of Afghan heritage. These rugs are highly valued for their authenticity and the sheer skill required to produce them. By bringing one into your home, you are not just choosing a floor covering, but a piece of cultural history that represents the resilience and creativity of the artisans who crafted it.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. With a knot density of 160,000 knots per m2, the construction process is a test of patience and precision, ensuring the durability and fine detail that define this authentic Afghan piece.

The weight of 17.4 kg across the 289 x 201 cm surface area is a direct indicator of the dense, high-quality wool pile and the solid foundation it is built upon. This substantial material investment requires significant human labour to manage the tension and knotting process, resulting in a floor covering that is built to last for generations.

Every step of the production process, from the initial setup of the foundation to the final trimming of the pile, is done entirely by hand. This intensive, labour-intensive approach is the only way to achieve the intricate design motifs and the dense, resilient structure that gives this rug its premium quality and lasting appeal.
