KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown196 x 294 cm

Kunduz rugs hail from the northern region of the Middle East, a land with a deep-rooted history of textile artistry. The weaving traditions here have been passed down through generations, often reflecting the nomadic and semi-nomadic lifestyles of the local tribes who used these rugs for both utility and artistic expression.

The construction of these rugs is defined by a commitment to traditional techniques. The use of high-quality Wool, often sourced from local mountain flocks, is essential to the final look and feel of the piece. This material is prized for its natural lanolin content, which gives the finished rug a resilient, slightly lustrous finish that ages beautifully over time.

Visually, Kunduz rugs are known for their bold, geometric language. They frequently incorporate repeating medallions and stylized motifs that draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape and ancient cultural symbols. The borders are often complex, framing the field with repeating patterns that create a harmonious and balanced aesthetic.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the sheer human effort required to produce them. To bring a Kunduz rug into your home is to connect with an ancient craft that continues to thrive through the dedication of modern artisans.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. Each individual knot is placed by hand, a process that requires immense patience and precision to ensure the integrity of the complex patterns and the strength of the finished piece.

With a weight of 17.3 kg distributed across its 294 x 196 cm surface, this rug demonstrates a substantial, high-density construction. This weight indicates the generous amount of quality Wool used, which contributes to its long-term durability and the luxurious feel of the pile.

The labour-intensive nature of hand-knotting ensures that the rug possesses a structural coherence that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match. By choosing this piece, you are supporting a time-honoured craft that values human skill and attention to detail above all else.
