KunduzHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black147 x 207 cm

The Kunduz rug originates from the historic northern region of Afghanistan, a land with a deep-seated tradition of textile artistry. For centuries, the nomadic and settled tribes of this region have refined their craft, drawing inspiration from the harsh yet beautiful landscape to create textiles that are as functional as they are beautiful.

The construction of these rugs relies on time-honoured techniques passed down through generations. The use of wool, sourced from local sheep, ensures a resilient and naturally stain-resistant pile. By employing traditional hand-knotting methods, weavers achieve a level of structural integrity that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match.

Visually, Kunduz rugs are known for their geometric precision and bold, symbolic motifs. You will often find stylised medallions and tribal symbols that tell the story of the artisan's heritage. The borders are typically framed by intricate, repeating patterns that create a balanced and harmonious look, often featuring earthy tones that ground the overall design.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural history. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the human story behind every knot. By bringing one into your home, you are not just selecting a floor covering, but preserving a living craft that connects your living space to the ancient Silk Road legacy.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process where each individual knot is placed by hand by skilled artisans. This specific technique requires immense precision and patience, often taking several months of dedicated work to complete a single piece of this size and density.

With a knot density of 160,000 knots per m2, the total knot count for this 3.04 m2 rug reaches approximately 486,400 knots. This exceptional level of density is the primary driver of the rug's longevity and durability, providing a firm, resilient pile that resists wear and retains its shape for generations.

The weight of 9.4 kg is a direct result of the high-quality materials and tight, dense knotting used throughout the construction. This substantial weight ensures that the rug lies perfectly flat on your floor, demonstrating the immense human effort and attention to detail that defines this premium, hand-crafted accessory.
