KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black113 x 169 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, a historic hub where various nomadic and settled weaving traditions converge. Weavers in this region draw upon generations of accumulated knowledge, utilising time-honoured techniques passed down through families to create carpets deeply rooted in Central Asian heritage.

The traditional crafting methods used in Kunduz involve careful preparation of natural fibres and meticulous hand-knotting. Artisans employ techniques that ensure the pile remains tightly secured to the foundation, creating a durable structure that withstands daily life while maintaining its tactile appeal over decades.

Visually, Kunduz rugs are renowned for their distinctive use of geometric medallions, repeating guls, and rich, saturated colour palettes dominated by deep reds and contrasting dark tones. These traditional motifs carry cultural meaning and historical continuity, reflecting the unique identity of the weavers who bring them to life.

Collecting a Kunduz rug means preserving a living tradition of craftsmanship and bringing genuine cultural weight into a modern home. These pieces are valued not only for their robust construction and lasting beauty, but also for the human story and artistic heritage embedded in every thread.

This rug is entirely handmade using traditional hand-knotted techniques that demand exceptional skill and patience from the artisan. Each individual knot is tied by hand onto the foundation, representing months of careful manual labour and deep technical expertise.

With a density of 90,000 knots per m2 distributed across a 169 x 113 cm surface, the total knot count reaches approximately 171,835 individual placements. This high knot count requires immense dedication, resulting in a remarkably crisp pattern definition and a dense, resilient pile.

Weighing 5.7 kg, the heavy construction reflects the generous amount of natural material and the tight, uncompromising build quality invested in every square centimetre. This meticulous manual process ensures a durable finished piece that holds its structural integrity and beauty for generations.
