The Koliai rugs are deeply rooted in the traditions of the Kurdish tribes inhabiting the mountainous regions of the Middle East. These weavers have long been celebrated for their ability to create rugs that are as durable as they are beautiful, often drawing inspiration from the rugged landscapes and rich cultural heritage of their ancestral lands.

The term Koliai refers to this distinct tribal style, which is characterised by a sturdy, high-pile construction. This type of weave is specifically designed to provide warmth and protection against the harsh climates of the high altitudes where these rugs originated, resulting in a product that is exceptionally resilient and long-lasting.

Visually, Koliai rugs are known for their bold, geometric designs and a vibrant use of colour. They often feature a large central medallion or repeating patterns that reflect the natural world, framed by intricate borders that demonstrate the weaver's skill. The use of deep, rich reds and blues is a hallmark of this tradition, creating a powerful and decorative impact.

These rugs are highly valued by collectors not only for their striking beauty but also for the cultural narrative they carry. To own a Koliai is to own a piece of living history, representing generations of skill passed down through families. It is a testament to the enduring nature of traditional craft in an increasingly modern world.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate weeks of focused effort to its creation. The process involves tying thousands of individual knots to build the design, a labour-intensive technique that ensures both the complexity of the patterns and the long-term structural integrity of the piece.

The substantial weight of 30.2 kg for this 292 x 207 cm rug is a clear indicator of its dense and robust construction. A heavier rug signifies more material and a tighter weave, which directly contributes to its durability and ability to retain its shape and beauty over time.

By choosing a hand-knotted rug, you are investing in a craft that relies on human precision and patience rather than industrial automation. The care invested in every square centimetre results in a product that not only looks refined but also stands up to the rigours of a busy home environment.
