Koliai rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the Middle East, crafted by the Kurdish tribes who have long been celebrated for their vibrant and durable weaving traditions. These rugs are born out of a nomadic heritage where the need for warmth and protection against harsh climates influenced the very structure of the weaving.

The term Koliai refers to the specific tribal style that balances bold, geometric sensibilities with a softer, more fluid approach to floral motifs. This unique blend of design elements is a hallmark of the region, where artisans have passed down their specific knotting techniques through generations to maintain the distinct aesthetic of their culture.

Visually, these rugs are defined by a rich colour palette and a central medallion or recurring floral patterns that draw the eye. The designs often incorporate deep, earthy tones contrasted with vibrant highlights, creating a balanced and harmonious look that fits perfectly in both traditional and transitional homes.

Collecting a Koliai rug is an investment in cultural heritage and skilled artistry. These pieces are valued for their authenticity and the honest, unhurried nature of their production. By choosing a rug from this tradition, you are continuing a long-standing practice of appreciation for craftsmanship that prioritises quality and longevity over mass production.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. By tying each knot individually by hand, the weavers ensure a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that machines cannot emulate. This labour-intensive process is what gives the rug its significant weight of 25.7 kg, reflecting the substantial amount of Wool used in its creation.

The density and weight of this piece are direct results of the time and skill invested in its foundation. With a size of 330 x 156 cm, the sheer volume of manual labour required to complete the rug is immense. This dedication to craft results in a durable, high-quality floor covering that is built to last, showcasing the genuine human effort behind every inch of the design.
