Kilim NimbaftHand WovenRug

Brown147 x 200 cm

The Kelim tradition in Afghanistan is a profound testament to the country's rich textile history. These flat-woven rugs have been produced for centuries by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes, serving not only as floor coverings but as essential, portable elements of daily life in the rugged landscapes of the Middle East.

The term 'Kelim' refers to the specific flat-weaving technique where the warp and weft threads are interlaced to form a smooth surface without a pile. This method results in a lightweight, durable rug that is highly prized for its versatility. The 'Nimbaft' style represents a specific regional approach, often characterised by its distinct, often geometric, artistic expression that reflects the cultural identity of the weavers.

The design of this rug features a series of scattered, vibrant motifs that echo the decorative traditions of Afghan weavers. These symbols are often inspired by the natural world or tribal heritage, arranged in a way that feels both structured and spontaneous. The use of varied colours on a neutral field is a hallmark of this tradition, showcasing the weaver's ability to balance bold creativity with a sense of visual harmony.

Collecting a hand-woven Afghan Kelim is more than a design choice; it is an act of preserving a specialised craft. These rugs are valued for their authenticity and the human story woven into every inch. By choosing a piece like this, you are honouring a tradition of skill that has been passed down through generations, securing a piece of cultural history for your own home.

Each Kelim Nimbaft is meticulously hand-woven by skilled artisans, a process that requires patience and a deep understanding of traditional looms. By avoiding machine production, every thread is placed with intent, resulting in a unique character that mass-manufactured items simply cannot achieve.

This specific piece measures 200 x 147 cm and weighs 2.9 kg, a testament to the density and quality of the Wool used. The weight of the rug is a clear indicator of the generous amount of material and the intensive human effort invested in its creation, ensuring a sturdy, long-lasting final product that stays firmly in place.
