KeshanHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange304 x 525 cm

Keshan rugs originate from the historic city of Kashan, a desert oasis town located on the ancient trade routes of the Middle East. Historically, this city was a centre for silk production, and the refinement of its weaving traditions has made it one of the most celebrated names in the world of fine rugs.

The term Keshan refers to a specific design tradition that emphasises harmony and detail. These rugs are known for their sophisticated construction, where the density of the knots allows for the creation of intricate, flowing floral motifs that appear almost fluid across the surface.

A hallmark of the Keshan style is the classic medallion layout, often surrounded by elaborate floral vines and palmettes. The borders are typically formal and structured, designed to frame the central field perfectly. This specific rug showcases these traditional elements with a grace that highlights the enduring appeal of the region's design language.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an opportunity to connect with a rich cultural history. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their combination of aesthetic beauty and technical durability, representing a level of skill that honours the heritage of Middle Eastern craftsmanship.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the sheer volume of labour invested in this piece is significant, ensuring the pattern remains sharp and the pile stays firm over many years of use.

The construction process relies on a sturdy cotton foundation, which provides the structural integrity needed to support the dense wool pile. Weighing 59.1 kg, the heavy construction reflects the quality of materials used and the extensive time required to achieve such a tight, resilient weave.

Every knot is placed by hand, a traditional skill passed down through generations. This hands-on approach allows for the nuanced detail and structural longevity that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match, making it a sound investment in craftsmanship.
