KeshanHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black294 x 391 cm

Keshan rugs originate from the historic city of Kashan in the Middle East, a region with a long-standing reputation for producing some of the most celebrated floor coverings in history. These rugs were traditionally crafted in the workshops of master weavers who drew inspiration from the artistic traditions of royal courts, blending local motifs with sophisticated design principles.

The craft of weaving these rugs has been refined over generations, with specific attention paid to the tension and quality of the foundation. The use of a cotton foundation provides the necessary structural support for the wool pile, allowing the rug to lay flat and maintain its shape even after years of use in a busy household.

Signature design elements of the Keshan style often include a central medallion surrounded by a sea of delicate floral vines, palmettos, and arabesques. The borders are typically formal and balanced, echoing the motifs found in the main field to create a sense of harmony. This particular piece showcases these classic elements in a way that respects the tradition while remaining visually striking.

Collectors value Keshan rugs for their balance of artistic vision and functional durability. Owning one is an opportunity to connect with a heritage of craftsmanship that has been preserved for centuries. It represents a commitment to enduring quality and an appreciation for the human effort that goes into creating a beautiful, lasting object.

This rug is created through a traditional hand-knotted process that requires significant time and focus from skilled artisans. By placing each knot individually by hand, the weavers ensure that the rug achieves a high level of density, which directly contributes to its strength and the clarity of its pattern.

With a total weight of 42.5 kg, this rug demonstrates the substantial amount of material used in its creation. This weight is a clear indicator of the density and durability of the construction, reflecting the many weeks of dedicated labour required to complete a piece of this size and complexity.

The precision involved in the hand-knotting process allows for the fine details seen in the floral motifs, which would be impossible to replicate with machine-made alternatives. This investment of human skill results in a high-quality finished product that offers lasting value and resilience for your home.
