KeshanHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black288 x 402 cm

The Keshan rug tradition originates from the historic city of Kashan in the Middle East, a region long celebrated for its contributions to the textile arts. For centuries, this city has been a vital hub for trade and craftsmanship, with its weavers earning a reputation for creating some of the most refined and balanced floor coverings in the world.

What sets these rugs apart is the harmony of their construction. The combination of a fine Wool pile on a sturdy cotton foundation allows for intricate, flowing designs that remain resilient over time. This technical foundation is what enables the characteristic detail and structural integrity that collectors have admired for generations.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their sophisticated floral arrangements and central medallions. The traditional red field is often paired with deep blue and ivory accents, creating a sense of depth and movement. These motifs are not merely decorative but are part of a storied design language that has evolved to emphasise balance and symmetry.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an opportunity to connect with a rich cultural heritage. These rugs are highly valued for their blend of artistic expression and practical longevity, representing a level of skill that is increasingly rare in the modern world. Every piece serves as a testament to the artisan's dedication and the enduring legacy of Middle Eastern weaving traditions.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to bring the intricate design to life. The process begins with the careful preparation of the foundation, onto which thousands of individual knots are tied by hand to create the dense, durable pile that defines this piece.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the total knot count for this rug reaches approximately 1.85 million knots. This high level of precision is essential for achieving the sharp, clear definition of the floral patterns and the balanced, uniform texture that gives the rug its premium feel.

The substantial weight of 42.8 kg is a direct result of the high-quality materials and the intensive, compact knotting process used throughout its creation. This weight is a hallmark of superior craftsmanship, signalling a rug that is both heavy enough to lie perfectly flat and robust enough to endure for generations.
