KeshanHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black136 x 206 cm

Keshan rugs take their name from the historic city of Kashan in Persia a legendary centre along ancient trade routes known for producing some of the finest floor coverings in the world. Weaving traditions in this region date back centuries where master artisans refined techniques that combined complex pictorial narratives with exceptionally durable construction.

The traditional hand-knotted construction used in this rug relies on tightly secured individual knots tied around the warp and weft threads. This meticulous method creates a dense pile that stands upright securely locking the colours and motifs in place while providing a luxurious surface texture.

While traditional Keshan carpets often feature central medallions and floral motifs this piece showcases a rare and narrative pictorial design. It depicts lively scenes of deer birds and detailed architectural structures framed by an ornate decorative border that demonstrates the remarkable versatility and artistic range of Persian weavers.

Collecting a vintage or handcrafted Keshan rug connects your home to a deeply rooted heritage of textile artistry. Each rug represents a high level of human skill and cultural history making it a valued possession for those who appreciate authentic craftsmanship and enduring quality.

This Keshan rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-knotted craftsmanship representing months of meticulous labour by skilled artisans. Each of the 250,000 knots per m2 has been individually tied by hand across the 2.8 m2 surface resulting in an approximate total of 700,000 individual knots.

Weighing 10.4 kg the substantial construction reflects the dense packing of natural wool fibres and foundation materials. This high material weight and tight knotting create a sturdy durable structure that allows the detailed pictorial pattern to remain sharp and well-defined over generations of use.
