Enjelos ca. 1890 - Woven with Stories from the Past

Discover an authentic antique Hamadan rug from ca. 1890. This truly one-of-a-kind piece brings genuine historical charm and rich wool warmth to your home.

Steeped in history, this antique rug dating from ca. 1890 brings a genuine sense of heritage directly into your living space. As a strictly one-of-a-kind piece, no two rugs are identical, meaning this exact composition of motifs and tones exists nowhere else in the world and will never be made again. Owning it means bringing a truly individual work of historical art into your home.

Crafted entirely from 100% wool, the rug offers a wonderfully soft yet sturdy tactile experience underfoot. The 12 mm thick pile provides generous cushioning, bringing natural warmth to wooden floors and helping to absorb ambient room sound for a much quieter, cosier atmosphere.

The dense arrangement of 160,000 knots per m2 plays a vital functional role, binding the 100% wool fibres tightly together to create a resilient surface that withstands daily living. This high knot density also allows for remarkably crisp pattern definition, ensuring the intricate traditional motifs remain sharp and clear.

Rooted in the rich weaving traditions of Persia, this Hamadan piece carries deep cultural provenance. Its age and authentic craftsmanship make it a rare find for anyone looking to anchor a room with genuine character and lasting quality.

Originating from the historic town of Hamadan in Persia, this rug belongs to one of the oldest continuous weaving regions in the world. Hamadan served as a major trading hub along ancient routes, gathering diverse tribal and village styles from the surrounding mountains and valleys into a rich local weaving culture.

The term Enjelos refers to a specific village tradition within the broader Hamadan sphere, known for distinctive tribal patterns and robust construction. The dense 100% wool pile is built to endure, reflecting a heritage where durability was just as important as visual beauty for nomadic and village weavers.

The design features a classic central medallion layout framed by repeating geometric motifs and floral elements, all set against a deeply saturated dark-blue field. This traditional visual language communicates stories of regional identity, with each motif carrying symbolic meaning tied to protection, prosperity, and connection to nature.

Collecting a piece of this age means preserving a tangible fragment of regional craft history. It represents a level of human skill and cultural dedication that modern automated looms simply cannot replicate, making it a treasured addition for any collector of traditional textiles.

This rug is entirely handmade using traditional hand-knotted techniques passed down through generations. Creating a piece of this scale involves tying approximately 411,840 individual knots by hand, a meticulous process requiring months of focused human effort from a skilled artisan.

Weighing 10.3 kg across a size of 195 x 132 cm, the construction relies on a high density of material that signals exceptional durability and craftsmanship. The precision required to set 160,000 knots per m2 results in a deeply packed pile that supports the longevity of the structure, ensuring it holds its form and beauty for decades to come.
