Classic OrientalHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange200 x 280 cm

The tradition of hand-knotted rugs in India finds its roots in the influence of Middle Eastern weaving techniques brought to the region centuries ago. Over time, these methods merged with local artistic sensibilities, resulting in a distinct style that favours lush, organic motifs and sophisticated colour palettes. This evolution has transformed India into a global centre for high-quality rug production.

The technical term hand-knotted refers to the practice of tying individual strands of material around the warp threads of the foundation. This method is the hallmark of premium rug making because it creates a pile that is incredibly resilient and capable of holding complex, multi-layered designs. It is this specific construction that gives the rug its lasting value and depth.

Floral patterns like the ones seen here are deeply embedded in the design language of this region. Often inspired by gardens and botanical themes, these motifs are typically arranged in a balanced, flowing structure that covers the entire field. The border, which acts as a frame for the central design, is carefully composed to complement the main field, creating a cohesive visual experience.

Owning a hand-knotted rug is a celebration of both heritage and human skill. Because the process is entirely manual, each piece becomes a document of the artisan's touch and the cultural traditions they uphold. Collectors value these rugs not only for their durability but for the unique story they tell, making them an investment in both beauty and tradition.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires significant skill and patience. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 280 x 200 cm piece represents months of dedicated work by experienced artisans. This high level of precision is what allows for such refined detail and a robust, high-quality pile.

The quality of the construction is further reflected in the total weight of 16.8 kg, which signals a dense and substantial foundation. This weight is a testament to the generous amount of material used and the tight tension applied during the knotting process, ensuring a durable product that will withstand everyday use while retaining its structural integrity.
