Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / OrangeRunner76 x 239 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road trading post of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic and village weavers first developed the distinctive repeating motifs. Over generations, weavers migrated and brought these cherished designs to new regions, with Pakistan becoming a renowned center for producing some of the finest interpretations of the style today.

The 3ply designation refers to the construction of the pile yarn, which is spun by twisting three individual strands of wool together before knotting. This multi-strand technique produces a noticeably thicker, heavier, and more hard-wearing pile than single-ply alternatives, resulting in a resilient surface with a rich, inviting texture.

The visual language of this tradition centers on the iconic gul motif, an octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallion arranged in orderly rows across the field. Enclosed by structured geometric borders, these repeating elements create a sense of calm symmetry and balanced rhythm that has defined the style for centuries.

Rugs from this tradition are valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their combination of enduring utility and deep cultural heritage. Owning a piece crafted with this level of historical technique connects your living space to a long lineage of skilled textile artistry.

This runner is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who spend months carefully tying each individual knot by hand. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2 across its 239 x 76 cm surface, the process requires immense patience, steady hands, and deep technical expertise passed down through generations.

Weighing 5.6 kg, the substantial construction reflects the generous amount of natural wool and human effort invested in its creation. Every single knot is securely packed into place to ensure exceptional pile density, structural integrity, and the kind of long-term durability that only hand-knotted techniques can achieve.
