Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark greyRunner76 x 235 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road trading post of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic tribes traditionally traded their textiles. Over generations, the weaving tradition migrated south into Pakistan, where master artisans preserved and refined the craft.

The 3ply designation in the name refers to the construction of the yarn, where three individual strands of wool are twisted together before knotting. This technique produces a notably thicker, heavier, and more resilient pile than standard single-ply yarns.

Traditional Bokhara design is characterised by repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in neat rows across the field, framed by precise geometric borders. While traditionally woven in rich reds, this piece features a distinctive blue field that offers a fresh take on a classic pattern.

Rugs from this heritage are valued by collectors for their cultural depth and the remarkable skill required to make them. Owning a piece like this means bringing a genuine slice of textile history and enduring craftsmanship into your living space.

Skilled artisans knot each strand by hand using traditional techniques passed down through generations, dedicating months of meticulous labour to complete a single piece of this size and density.

Weighing 5.5 kg across its 235 x 76 cm dimensions, the heavy construction reflects a generous amount of pure wool and a tight knot count of 160,000 knots per m2.

This careful hand-knotted process ensures the intricate patterns remain sharp and the pile stays resilient, resulting in a durable floor covering built to last for generations.
