Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black170 x 234 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road trading post of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic and village weavers first popularized these distinctive motifs. Over generations, the tradition migrated southward into Pakistan, where local artisans embraced and refined the craft, developing it into one of the most respected styles of oriental rug making today.

The 3ply construction refers to the specific way the wool yarn is prepared, using three distinct strands twisted tightly together before knotting. This multi-strand approach creates a notably denser, more lustrous, and hard-wearing pile than single-ply alternatives, ensuring the rug handles daily footfall while maintaining its soft surface texture.

The visual language of this tradition is defined by repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in neat rows across the field. These are framed by carefully balanced geometric border guards, creating a harmonious composition that brings order and quiet elegance to a room.

Rugs from this tradition are valued and collected worldwide for their rich cultural heritage and enduring craftsmanship. Owning one means welcoming a piece of living history into your home, created through skills passed down across generations of artisan families.

This rug is entirely handmade through a meticulous hand-knotted technique, representing weeks and months of careful human labor. Artisans work from traditional charts, tying each individual strand of wool onto the cotton foundation by hand to build a dense and resilient pile.

With a knot density of 160000 knots per m2 distributed across the 234 x 170 cm dimensions, the process requires immense patience and steady focus. The total count reaches hundreds of thousands of individual knots, reflecting the genuine skill and time invested by the weaver.

Weighing 12.3 kg, the substantial construction further demonstrates the generous amount of natural material and time required to complete the piece. This intensive hand-crafting process ensures a sturdy, heavy-wearing rug that will endure for generations.
