Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark redRunner80 x 241 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road trading hub of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic and village weavers historically brought their textiles to market. Over generations, the distinct design traditions migrated southward, with some of the finest expressions of the craft finding a vibrant new home in Pakistan.

The designation 2ply refers to the construction of the pile yarn, which is spun by twisting two individual strands of wool together before knotting. This technique produces a stronger, denser, and more resilient pile than a single-ply yarn, resulting in a surface that wears gracefully and displays a richer lustre.

Visually, this tradition is defined by repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in neat rows across the field. Enclosed by orderly geometric borders, these motifs reflect a heritage of symmetry and careful arrangement rooted in tribal history.

Collectors and design enthusiasts value Bokhara rugs for their combination of enduring visual balance and remarkable tactile durability. Owning a piece from this tradition connects your living space to centuries of textile artistry and human craftsmanship.

Skilled artisans have crafted this hand-knotted runner using time-honoured techniques passed down through generations. Every single knot is tied meticulously by hand around the foundation threads, requiring immense patience, steady hands, and deep technical expertise.

With a total area of approximately 1.93 m2 and a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this rug required roughly 482,500 individual hand-tied knots. A piece of this scale and complexity represents months of continuous, focused hand-weaving work.

Weighing 4.8 kg, this runner demonstrates a substantial construction and a generous amount of natural wool per square metre. This rigorous attention to build quality ensures a durable floor covering that stays firmly in place and maintains its shape over decades of use.
