Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black195 x 204 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub for trade and textile artistry. While the design tradition originated in these nomadic regions, the finest contemporary examples are now primarily woven in Pakistan, where artisans have elevated the craft to new heights.

The term 2ply refers to a construction method where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted into the foundation. This creates a denser, more lustrous, and remarkably resilient pile compared to single-ply alternatives, ensuring the rug retains its softness and depth even after years of use.

The visual language of the Bokhara is defined by its repetitive, calming symmetry. The field is typically filled with gul motifs—octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in precise rows—and enclosed by elegant, formal borders. This balanced aesthetic is designed to bring order and harmony to a room.

These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their blend of historical symbolism and technical excellence. Owning a hand-knotted Bokhara is an investment in a living tradition, representing a standard of skill that connects the modern home to centuries of cultural heritage.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, a process that requires immense patience and precision. By individually tying each knot, the weaver ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that machines simply cannot match.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the construction of this rug is substantial, requiring months of dedicated work to complete. This high knot count is the hallmark of a premium rug, resulting in a firm, resilient pile that can withstand years of use while keeping the intricate patterns sharp and defined.

The total weight of 9.9 kg for this 204 x 195 cm piece speaks to the quality and density of the materials used. This weight provides a stable, substantial feel that keeps the rug lying flat and secure, reflecting the significant human effort and expert craftsmanship poured into every square centimetre of the weave.
