Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark grey142 x 208 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, which historically served as a major trading hub for nomadic and village weavers. Over generations, the tradition migrated southward into Pakistan, where master weavers refined the techniques to produce some of the finest wool rugs available today.

The 2ply designation in this rug category refers to the use of two individual strands of wool twisted together before knotting. This technique produces a stronger, denser, and more lustrous pile compared to single-ply construction, ensuring the rug handles everyday wear while retaining its soft sheen.

Visually, this tradition is defined by repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in orderly rows across the field. Enclosed by formal geometric borders, this specific piece features a striking black field that offers a contemporary contrast to the traditional warm beige motifs.

Rugs from this lineage are valued by collectors for their blend of nomadic heritage and precise craftsmanship. Owning a piece from this tradition means connecting with centuries of weaving skill and bringing a durable, culturally rich textile into modern interiors.

Created through traditional hand-knotting techniques in Pakistan, this rug represents months of dedicated human labor by skilled artisans. Each of the approximately 737,360 individual knots was tied completely by hand across the 208 x 142 cm surface.

Weighing 7.4 kg, the dense construction reflects the substantial amount of natural wool and careful craftsmanship invested in every square centimetre. This meticulous knotting process ensures exceptional structural integrity and long-term durability, creating a foundation designed to withstand daily life.

The precision required to achieve this knot density means the pattern remains sharp and the pile stays resilient over time. This level of craftsmanship requires patience and deep expertise, resulting in a premium piece built to last for generations.
