The Bidjar rug, often referred to as the Iron Rug of the Middle East, originates from the Kurdish town of Bidjar. These rugs are legendary for their incredible durability and stiff, heavy construction, which has allowed them to withstand generations of use in the rugged environments of their home region.

The term 'Iron Rug' stems from the traditional weaving technique where the weft threads are beaten down with exceptional force using a heavy metal comb. This creates an extremely compact and dense structure, ensuring that the rug remains firm and resistant to wear, a hallmark of the Bidjar tradition that remains highly valued by collectors today.

Visually, Bidjar rugs are celebrated for their sophisticated floral and geometric designs. They frequently feature a central medallion surrounded by a field of intricate, repeating motifs such as the Herati pattern, which consists of a central flower enclosed by leaves. The borders are typically wide and complex, framing the field with a sense of formal balance and precision.

Owning a Bidjar rug is an investment in cultural heritage and refined skill. These pieces are collected not only for their robust construction but for the artistic depth they bring to a space. They represent a bridge between ancient techniques and contemporary living, offering a sense of history that is both tangible and enduring.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense patience and precision. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 100 x 70 cm piece involves approximately 17,500 individual knots, each tied by hand to ensure the highest possible quality.

The labour-intensive nature of this craft is evident in the final result. The weight of 3.5 kg reflects the generous amount of high-quality wool used to build the pile, guaranteeing a durable and dense construction that will serve your home for many years to come.

Every knot contributes to the clarity of the design and the overall strength of the rug. By choosing a hand-knotted piece, you are supporting a tradition of craft where the focus is on longevity and the careful, human-led assembly of materials that machines simply cannot replicate.
