Bidjar rugs hail from the Kurdish region of the Middle East, a mountainous area known for producing some of the most durable and long-lasting rugs in the world. Often referred to as the Iron Rugs of the East, they are celebrated for their incredibly tight construction and heavy, robust foundations.

The term Bidjar refers to the specific town in the Middle East where this style evolved. The craft here is defined by a unique technique where the foundation is kept extremely taut during the knotting process, which forces the pile to stand upright. This creates a dense, carpet-like surface that is famous for its ability to withstand decades of heavy wear.

Visually, these rugs are known for their sophisticated use of colour and complex, often curvilinear motifs. The field is typically adorned with elaborate floral patterns or the classic Herati design, which features a central flower surrounded by leaves. This specific piece showcases the deep, saturated reds and blues that have become the hallmark of the region's artistic output.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in human skill and regional history. Collectors prize these rugs not just for their aesthetic beauty, but for the resilience and technical mastery they represent. By acquiring this rug, you are preserving a legacy of craft that has been passed down through generations of dedicated weavers.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense focus and patience. Given its size of 180 x 115 cm and a knot density of 360,000 knots per m2, the total knot count reaches approximately 745,000 individual knots. This level of complexity means a single weaver spends months dedicated solely to the creation of this one piece.

The density achieved through this traditional hand-knotting method is the reason for the rug's exceptional structural integrity. By carefully wrapping each strand around the foundation, the artisans ensure a pile that is tightly packed and resilient. This labour-intensive craft results in a heavier, more substantial rug that stands up to years of use without losing its form or detail.
