BidjarHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown108 x 151 cm

The Bidjar rug tradition originates from the Kurdish region of the Middle East, specifically the town of Bidjar. These rugs are famously known as the iron rugs of the region due to their exceptional durability and incredibly dense construction, which historically made them highly sought after for both their beauty and their ability to withstand heavy use.

The technical mastery behind a Bidjar lies in the specific way the foundation is prepared and the knots are tied. The term refers to a specific weaving tradition where the weft threads are beaten down with intense pressure, creating a pile so tight that it feels stiff and substantial. This technique is what gives the rug its legendary longevity and structural integrity.

Design-wise, Bidjar rugs often feature a sophisticated central medallion or an all-over Herati pattern, which is a stylized floral motif representing a fish in a pond. The borders are typically wide and complex, framing the field with repeating patterns that demonstrate the weaver's skill in maintaining symmetry and detail across the entire surface of the rug.

Owning a Bidjar is an investment in cultural heritage. These rugs are collected not only for their striking aesthetic appeal but also as a testament to the skill of the artisans who have preserved these ancient techniques over generations. It is a piece that carries the weight of history into a modern home.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused labour to bring the intricate patterns to life. Every individual knot is placed with precision, a process that requires immense patience and a deep understanding of the craft to ensure the final result is both visually sharp and structurally sound.

The quality of this piece is evidenced by its substantial weight of 7.8 kg, which reflects the high density of material used in its creation. This density is the mark of a superior rug, providing a firm foundation that keeps the pile upright and defined, ensuring the design remains crisp even after years of use in your home.

By choosing a hand-knotted rug, you are supporting a tradition of excellence where the human touch is evident in every detail. This level of craftsmanship cannot be matched by machines, resulting in a piece that offers a level of durability and character that synthetic alternatives simply cannot replicate.
