BidjarHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown105 x 162 cm

The Bidjar rug tradition originates from the Kurdish town of Bidjar in the Middle East, a region celebrated for its robust and exceptionally durable floor coverings. These rugs are often referred to as the iron rugs of the region, a testament to their incredibly dense construction which allows them to withstand generations of heavy use without losing their form.

The hallmark of a traditional Bidjar construction is the heavy, compact weave that creates a remarkably firm and sturdy pile. This is achieved through a specialised process where the foundation is beaten down with a heavy metal comb, ensuring that the Wool remains tightly packed and upright. This technique is not just a stylistic choice but a functional one that contributes to the legendary longevity of these pieces.

Visually, these rugs are known for their sophisticated use of floral motifs and central medallions, often set against a rich, saturated field. The patterns frequently draw inspiration from the natural world, incorporating stylised leaves and blossoms that are woven with a rhythmic, balanced precision. The inclusion of a dark, decorative border provides a sharp contrast to the central field, framing the composition with elegance.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage and artisanal skill. These rugs are highly sought after by collectors who value the combination of artistic beauty and structural permanence. By bringing a Bidjar into your home, you are acquiring a piece of history that speaks to a long-standing tradition of excellence and a dedication to craft that remains relevant today.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused, precise labour to complete a single piece. Every individual knot is carefully placed, resulting in a remarkably dense and resilient pile that is far more durable than mass-produced alternatives.

With a knot density of 160,000 knots per m2, the level of precision required is substantial. This high density allows for the sharp, clear definition of the intricate floral patterns seen across the field, ensuring that the design remains crisp and vibrant throughout the life of the rug.

The substantial construction is further evidenced by the total weight of 8.2 kg for this 162 x 105 cm piece. This weight signifies a generous use of high-quality materials and a tightly packed foundation that provides both the necessary heft to lay flat and the long-term durability expected of a premium, hand-crafted item.
