BaluchHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown98 x 178 cm

Baluch rugs are traditionally crafted by the nomadic and semi-nomadic Baluchi tribes who span the border regions of the Middle East. These rugs are deeply connected to a migratory lifestyle, where the weaving traditions have been passed down through generations, reflecting the specific cultural identity and artistic expression of these resilient people.

The term Baluch refers to both the people and the distinctive style of their weaving. These pieces are often characterised by their use of high-quality Wool, which is known for its softness and durability. The construction typically involves a tightly knotted pile on a strong foundation, creating a texture that is both substantial and comfortable, suitable for the rugged conditions of nomadic life.

Signature design elements often include repeating geometric motifs, stylised floral patterns, and intricate borders that frame the field. The colour palettes are traditionally derived from natural dyes, favouring deep reds, browns, and dark blues, which often fade into beautiful, muted tones over time. This particular piece showcases a classic aesthetic that remains true to the heritage of the Baluchi weaving tradition.

Owning a Baluch rug is more than just a decor choice; it is an appreciation of a heritage craft that has survived for centuries. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their individuality and the human story woven into every inch. By bringing one into your home, you are preserving a piece of history and celebrating the artistry of a tradition that remains vibrant and relevant today.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense focus and manual dexterity. Each individual knot is tied by hand across the foundation, a labour-intensive method that ensures the pile is securely locked in place for superior resilience.

With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 1.74 m2 rug represents a significant investment of time and human effort. This high knot count is directly responsible for the crispness of the patterns and the dense, luxurious feel of the pile, ensuring the rug can withstand the demands of daily use.

The construction is further supported by a sturdy cotton foundation, which provides the necessary tension for the Wool pile to sit perfectly. The combined weight of 4.7 kg reflects the generous amount of high-quality material used, confirming the substantial nature of its build and the care taken in its production.
