BaluchHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown95 x 170 cm

Baluch rugs are named after the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes that have roamed the border regions between the Middle East and neighbouring countries for centuries. These weavers have long been known for their ability to translate their rich cultural identity into durable, functional textiles that reflect the landscapes they inhabit.

The craft relies on specific traditional techniques that prioritise longevity and visual depth. The wool is often hand-spun and dyed using natural pigments, which accounts for the deep, earthy palette frequently seen in these pieces. Each knotting choice is deliberate, ensuring that the finished rug is not only a decorative item but a sturdy textile built for the rigours of nomadic life.

Design-wise, these rugs are celebrated for their geometric motifs and stylised representations of tribal symbols. You will often see repeating patterns or centralised medallions framed by complex, decorative borders that showcase the weaver's technical skill. These designs are not merely aesthetic but are often steeped in the cultural lore and personal history of the tribal groups who create them.

Collecting a rug from this tradition means acquiring a piece of living history. These rugs are highly valued for their authenticity and the human story behind every thread. By bringing one into your home, you are preserving an artistic legacy and honouring the dedication of artisans who continue to practice these ancient, time-honoured methods.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and precision. With a density of 90,000 knots per m2, the artisan has placed every single knot by hand to build the intricate pattern you see. A rug of this size, measuring 170 x 95 cm, represents a significant investment of time and human effort, often taking weeks of dedicated work to complete.

The quality of this piece is further evidenced by its substantial weight of 9 kg. This weight reflects the generous amount of high-quality wool used to create a dense, resilient pile. By choosing a hand-knotted piece, you are supporting a tradition where the maker's focus on detail ensures the rug maintains its structure and integrity for years to come.
