BakhtiariHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black223 x 310 cm

The Bakhtiari region, located in the mountainous areas of the Middle East, is home to a rich weaving tradition that has been passed down through generations. The nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of this region are famous for their skill in creating rugs that reflect the rugged beauty of their landscape and the complexity of their cultural heritage.

Technically, these rugs are defined by their sturdy construction and the use of high-quality materials. The term Bakhtiari refers not only to the origin but also to a specific approach to design and durability, where the foundation is crafted to provide a long-lasting and resilient base. This technical focus ensures that the rugs remain functional even in the most demanding environments.

Signature design elements often include the garden motif or the classic medallion, both of which are executed with a distinct flair for colour and balance. The borders are usually wide and ornate, framing the central field with repeating patterns that draw the eye toward the heart of the rug. In this particular piece, the interplay between the deep red field and the lighter medallion creates a beautiful visual contrast.

Collecting a rug from this tradition is an investment in cultural history and refined skill. These pieces are valued for their ability to bridge the gap between functional household items and artistic expression. Owning one is a way to celebrate the enduring legacy of Middle Eastern craftsmanship and the dedication of the artisans who keep these traditions alive.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and steady precision. By tying each individual knot by hand, the artisan ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that remains consistent throughout the entire surface of the rug.

Given the substantial weight of 26.3 kg across its generous dimensions, this piece reflects a dense and robust construction. This significant material investment is a testament to the effort required to create such a durable floor covering, resulting in a heavy, high-quality foundation that lies flat and stays secure.

The time and human effort invested in this hand-knotted creation are evident in every detail. Because of the sheer number of knots required for a piece of this size, the production represents a long-term commitment to quality, ensuring that the rug is built to last and retain its character through generations of use.
