BakhtiariHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown220 x 310 cm

The Bakhtiari region, located in the mountainous areas of the Middle East, is home to a rich tradition of weaving that reflects the rugged landscape and the nomadic lifestyle of its people. These rugs are celebrated for their strength and their distinctive ability to tell stories through complex, geometric, and floral imagery.

The term Bakhtiari refers to the tribal confederation whose women have traditionally created these pieces using wool sourced from their own flocks. This heritage of self-sufficiency results in a rug that is not only beautiful but built to endure, often featuring a foundation that provides exceptional stability.

The signature design element of this tradition is the 'kheshti' or garden panel pattern, which is prominently featured here. Each square represents a stylized garden plot, filled with birds, trees, or intricate floral sprays. This design is said to be inspired by the formal gardens of the region, bringing the beauty of nature into the home through a structured, repetitive aesthetic.

Collectibility of these rugs stems from the immense skill required to maintain symmetry and balance across such a complex panel layout. To own a Bakhtiar is to possess a piece of cultural history that values both the harmony of the design and the lasting nature of the materials used.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who have honed their craft over generations. The process involves securing each individual knot onto a sturdy cotton foundation, a labour-intensive method that ensures the rug remains durable and resilient even with regular use.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, this rug represents hundreds of hours of focused human effort. This high knot count allows for the complex, precise detailing seen in the garden panels and ensures a firm, dense pile that will hold its shape and beauty over time.

The substantial weight of 25.9 kg is a direct result of the high-quality wool and the density of the construction. This weight not only contributes to the rug's longevity but also ensures that it stays securely in place on your floor, providing a stable and luxurious surface.
