Afshar Shahre BabakHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown108 x 172 cm

The Afshar Shahre Babak rugs originate from the nomadic Afshar tribes of the Middle East, a group with a rich history of weaving that spans centuries. These rugs are highly regarded for their ability to blend nomadic traditions with settled village life, resulting in a distinct aesthetic that is both rustic and refined.

The craftsmanship found in these pieces is defined by a deep understanding of natural dyes and Wool preparation. The weavers utilise traditional techniques to ensure the longevity of the rug, often focusing on a tight knot structure that allows for the fine detailing seen in the geometric borders and iconic central medallions.

Visually, these rugs are characterised by a vibrant yet grounded colour palette, often featuring deep reds and blues. The motifs are typically angular and geometric, reflecting the tribal roots of the weavers. The Shahre Babak style, in particular, is known for its balanced compositions that often incorporate symbolic elements representing the weaver's environment and beliefs.

Collectors value these rugs for their cultural significance and the high level of human skill required to produce them. Owning an Afshar piece is more than just purchasing a floor covering; it is an investment in a living tradition, preserving the artistry and creative spirit of a community that has maintained its unique visual language for generations.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate countless hours to every detail. By securing each strand of Wool individually, the weavers create a resilient and dense pile that is built to withstand daily use while maintaining its intricate pattern clarity.

With a weight of 4.6 kg, this piece demonstrates a substantial and robust construction. The careful balance of materials and the patient, manual labour involved in its creation ensure that the finished rug is not only visually stunning but also structurally sound and durable.
