Afshar Shahre BabakHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown103 x 140 cm

The Afshar Shahre Babak rugs originate from the tribal traditions of the Middle East, specifically from the Afshar people. These rugs are deeply rooted in the nomadic history of the region, where weaving was a central part of daily life and cultural expression.

The term Shahre Babak refers to a specific region known for its highly distinct weaving style. The craft is defined by a dedication to traditional techniques that prioritise long-term durability and the use of locally sourced, high-quality Wool that is known for its natural lustre.

Visually, these rugs are celebrated for their bold geometric motifs and striking, saturated colour palettes. The field often features stylised medallions and angular, tribal-inspired shapes, framed by intricate borders that reflect the specific artistic language of the weaving community.

Owning an Afshar Shahre Babak rug is an opportunity to connect with a storied tradition. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the skill required to produce them, serving as a tangible link to a rich cultural heritage that values endurance and artistry.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. By tying each individual strand of Wool by hand, the artisan ensures a level of control and tightness that machines simply cannot replicate.

With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2, this piece represents a significant investment of time and human effort. Given its size of 140 x 103 cm, the total knot count exceeds 360,000, a figure that speaks to the months of dedicated work required to complete such a detailed design.

The substantial weight of 3.6 kg is a direct result of the high-density construction and quality of materials used. This weight provides a stable, heavy drape that lies flat and stays in place, serving as a testament to the robust and careful craftsmanship that defines this piece.
