Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BlackRunner81 x 206 cm

Afghan Khal Mohammadi rugs hold a unique place in the weaving traditions of Central Asia. Unlike many traditional styles named after villages or tribes, these rugs are named after Khal Mohammadi, a master dyer and weaver who developed the signature deep red tones and robust structures in the late twentieth century.

The hallmark of a Khal Mohammadi is its rich, warm colour palette, dominated by deep coppery reds, rusts, and dark blues. These distinctive shades are achieved using high-quality natural dyes, which give the wool a lustrous sheen and a depth of colour that matures beautifully over time.

The design of these rugs features geometric medallions, often variations of the traditional Göls or repeating tribal motifs, enclosed by detailed borders. The patterns are precise and symmetrical, reflecting the disciplined skill of the weavers who pass these designs down through generations.

Today, Khal Mohammadi rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their exceptional durability and rich cultural heritage. Owning one is a way to connect with a living craft tradition that continues to thrive in Afghanistan.

This runner is hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, using traditional techniques that require patience and precision. Every single knot is tied by hand, creating a dense and sturdy structure designed to last.

Made with a wool pile, the rug has a substantial weight of 5.2 kg for its 206 x 81 cm size. This weight is a direct indicator of the density of the weave and the quality of the natural materials used, ensuring the runner lies flat and secure on your floor.

The time and human effort invested in hand-knotting this piece make it a premium addition to your home. The artisan's skill is visible in the slight variations of the pattern, which give the runner its individual character and value.
