Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark redRunner79 x 287 cm

Afghan rug making has deep roots in Central Asian traditions, where nomadic and village weavers passed down intricate geometric designs through generations. The Afghan Akhche tradition represents a continuation of these ancient skills, adapting classic motifs for modern homes while preserving authentic hand-knotting methods.

The 2ply wool construction used here means the yarn is twisted from two distinct strands before knotting. This technique increases the strength and resilience of the pile, ensuring the rug stands up well to daily foot traffic while retaining a soft touch.

The design features repeating gul motifs, which are traditional octagonal medallions arranged in orderly rows across the field. Framed by geometric borders, these motifs carry centuries of cultural symbolism related to tribal heritage and family identity.

Collecting a piece from this tradition means acquiring a genuine work of functional art. The considerable time and skill invested by the weaver ensure that this rug carries lasting cultural weight and timeless appeal for your home.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who tie individual strands of wool onto the foundation by hand, a traditional craft process requiring immense patience and precision.

Creating a runner of 287 x 79 cm at a density of 90,000 knots per m2 means artisans tied approximately 645,000 individual knots by hand. This meticulous process takes months of dedicated daily work to complete.

Weighing 7 kg, the substantial construction reflects the dense packing of wool and foundation yarns, resulting in a durable piece built to last for generations.
