Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

BlackRunner76 x 300 cm

Afghan Akhche rugs originate from northern Afghanistan, woven primarily by Turkmen weavers. These rugs are deeply rooted in nomadic and semi-nomadic traditions, carrying centuries of cultural history through their patterns.

The Afghan Akhche designation represents a specific, highly respected class of traditional weaving. The use of hand-spun wool and natural dyes creates a characteristic depth of colour, with subtle variations known as abrash that occur naturally during the dyeing and weaving process.

Visually, these rugs are celebrated for their repeating gul motifs, often referred to as elephant-foot patterns, set against a deep red or dark field. The central field is framed by intricate geometric borders that tell stories of tribal identity and regional heritage.

Owning an Afghan Akhche runner is an appreciation of living history. These pieces are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their durability, rich cultural narrative, and the warmth they bring to modern interiors.

This runner is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process requiring weeks of focused attention and immense patience. Every individual knot is tied by hand, building the intricate pattern row by row.

With a substantial weight of 7.1 kg for its 300 x 76 cm size, this runner demonstrates a dense and robust construction. The sheer volume of wool packed into this piece ensures a heavy, stable rug that lies flat and resists wear.

The handmade nature means that every line and motif carries the subtle touch of the weaver, resulting in a structural integrity and character that machine-made alternatives simply cannot replicate.
