Knowing where to start when it comes to finding the best playroom rugs is not always an easy task. Both you and your little one should like it, and it’s a big plus if it matches the rest of the interior. And since you’re placing the rug in a playroom, durability is key since it’s likely to be the scene for various mischievous antics. But don’t worry, we’re here to help! Continue reading to get our 7 top tips for finding the best rugs for playrooms.

1. It’s not just a rug

A helpful stepping stone when the floor is lava, a small island where the shipwrecked pirate lives or a colourful dance floor for the impromptu disco. A rug is never just a rug when you place it in the kids’ room. And, maybe this goes without saying, but a rug for the kids’ room should, of course, be playable. Choose the best rug material for playrooms such as wool rugs for kids that can stand heavy foot traffic, a wild dance competition and happy bouncing. And by decorating the playroom with rugs, you make sure that there’s always a soft and cosy place to hang out and read a book.

2. What rug?! This is a race track!

By making the rug an active part of the play, the kids will likely enjoy having it in their room. Look for rugs that encourage interactive play by featuring a colourful map of the world, numbers, the alphabet, or a dwindling race track. Let the toy cars drive away on an adventure, gather all the stuffed animals to practise the alphabet, or place the toy animals on different parts of the map depending on their natural habitat. Did you know that even though the polar bears and the penguins live in similar climates, you’ll never find them together as they live on different continents?

3. Style with a roar!

Speaking of animals, decorating with the best playroom rugs is the perfect opportunity to bring bright colours, odd shapes and fantasy-sparking elements into your home. Animal rugs for kids are always a popular choice. Even if the rest of your interior style is minimalistic and stylish, the playroom is the place to go wild. Let out a “roar!” and style with uneven shapes of animals or a round kids rug decorated with cute creatures.

4. Washable rugs = your new BFFs!

A wild brush stroke with paint ending up everywhere. Colourful finger paint that never stays just on the hands. Or a crayon that rolls away on its own adventure. Let’s just say that even the best playroom rugs might have a bit of a dangerous time around kids. Your best friend here? A washable rug for kids, or (even better) a machine washable rug! Assess the situation, shake off crumbs or loose debris, and toss the rug into the washer. The golden rule is not to let any rug stand in the way of an aspiring artist’s creativity.

5. Soft and cosy or ready for play?

The best type of carpet for a playroom can depend on your kid’s age and the types of activities that take place in the room. When looking for nursery rugs, you might want to go for a shaggy kids rug that feels soft underfoot and gives the room an atmosphere of being a cosy nest for the new family member. A thick pile rug may also dampen the sound of your footsteps – a nice feature when the little one (finally!) falls asleep, and you need to sneak out of the room. On the other hand, the rugs you choose for toddlers need to be more prepared for active playing rather than just being cosy. Here, a large kids rug is a top choice, giving your little one the space and freedom to roam around in comfort.

6. A splash of colours or matching solids?

When thinking about how to decorate your kid’s room, selecting the right colours plays a big part. By going with a single-coloured kids rug, you can easily match the rug to other furniture, wallpapers or interior details to create a harmonic atmosphere. Another option is to decorate the room in light, neutral hues and add colourful details. In that case, let the rug be a vivid splash of colours and patterns that you can pair with cushions, bed linens or wall decorations. Kids rugs with dots can be a fun choice to add both colour and patterns to the room.

7. Prevent the rug from taking off

Running, jumping, cartwheeling… At some point, you kind of lose track of the different ways kids are transporting themselves from point A to point B. And in those cases, your rug should not go with the flow. Instead, it should be lying very still to prevent tiny feet from tripping and slipping – because it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. With an accessory like an anti-slip underlay, your rug gets a good grip on the floor and won’t fly away when small feet take a shortcut right over it.

Don’t settle for mismatches!

To sum up, finding the best area rug for playrooms doesn’t necessarily mean settling for something that mismatches your style or the rest of the room. By taking your kids’ age and interests into consideration and choosing a rug that quickly can become part of all the fun and games happening in the playroom, whether it’s as a race track or as an imaginative island, you can be sure that you’ve found the best playroom rug.
